This week, Governor Kay Ivey announced an $875,000 grant to bolster efforts in providing care for rape victims throughout the state.

The Alabama Coalition Against Rape (ACAR) will utilize the funds to support its 15 member agencies, enhancing their ability to offer crucial services and training according to a news release.

The grant will fund training and technical assistance for first responders handling rape and sexual assault cases, ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective intervention.

"This grant will allow the Coalition to continue offering timely, professional and caring assistance to rape victims statewide," Ivey said in the release. "I am pleased to support this group in its mission to help victims heal and seek justice."

Per the release, ACAR provides a range of direct services, including a 24-hour hotline and referrals. Its member agencies offer vital crisis intervention, counseling and advocacy for victims as they navigate medical, criminal justice and social support systems.

The grant, administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA), is funded through the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell praised the ACAR's impact, stating,

"The Alabama Coalition Against Rape supports not only victims but also law enforcement, medical professionals and others who assist with rape and sexual assault cases," ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. "ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in commending the coalition for providing essential services."

ADECA manages a diverse array of programs that support law enforcement, victim services, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
