Goodrich lays off 78 at Foley plant

FOLEY, Ala. — Approximately 78 workers at Goodrich Corp.’s Foley plant were notified on Friday that their positions would be terminated on Jan. 15, 2010. The workers affected are part of the Foley plant’s Maintenance Repair Overhaul area, according to Patrick Palmer, a Goodrich spokesman in Chula Vista, Calif.

In a telephone interview on Monday, Palmer noted Goodrich had announced on Nov. 20, 2009, that there would be staff reductions at the Foley plant.

“Our first priority is to see that (affected) employees are treated with dignity and respect,” Palmer said.

The severance package offered by the company will be equal to one week of salary for every year of continuous service, Palmer said.

That will include a minimum of four weeks, he added.

Also, Goodrich will continue to contribute to the employees’ health and life insurance for six months. Workers will also have an option for 12 months of Cobra healthcare coverage once the health insurance deadline is reached, Palmer said.

Goodrich, which bought the Foley plant from Rohr in 1997, employs approximately 800 workers at the site. Goodrich noted in November concerning impending layoffs in Foley that the maintenance side of their aerospace business had experienced a decline due to the economy.

According to Palmer, Goodrich will also help those workers losing their jobs find employment opportunities in the area and assist them with writing vita or job applications.

The other “business” area of the Foley plant is original equipment, Palmer said, but all the job terminations are coming out of the maintenance side of the plant. According to Palmer, before the layoffs were announced the maintenance side of the Foley plant employed approximately 400 workers.
