John Samuel Gonas Jr., 67, a native of South Bend, Ind., a former resident of Mobile, and a longtime resident of Daphne, died Monday, July 2, 2007.

He graduated from Howe Military School, Purdue University and Cumberland School of Law. He practiced criminal law in Mobile for over 35 years and was a member of the Alabama Bar Association. He was an active member and past president of the Daphne Rotary Club and was the original chairman of the Daphne Jubilee Easter Egg Hunt. He had been actively involved in the Republican Party in Baldwin County. He was a lay reader, chalice bearer, founder of EYC youth group, and former member of the vestry of St. James Episcopal Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife Rosemonde Christman Gonas, and his parents Theodosia Bonder and John Samuel Gonas Sr.

Survivors include a son, John Samuel (Jill Turner Gonas) Gonas III of Nashville, Tenn.; two daughters, Rosemonde Gray Gonas of Fairhope, and Elizabeth Gonas (William Douglas “Doug” Gaines) Gaines of Omaha, Neb.; six grandchildren, Samuel, Eli and John, Matthew Gonas and Mary Rosemonde, Lily and William Gaines; brother, Roy Bonder (Dr. Roselyn Smith Gonas) Gonas of Miami; nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held beginning at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 21 at St. James Episcopal Church. Interment will follow at St. James Episcopal Church Memorial Garden.

The family requests memorial donations be made in light of his heart for the church, education, and children.
