Golden Bears splits with Tigers

ROBERTSDALE — The Golden Bears split a doubleheader with Baldwin County on Good Friday by staging two seventh-inning rallies.

Robertsdale snapped a 2-2 tie with four runs for a 6-2 win in the opener, then BCHS scored twice in the top of the seventh in the second game for a 3-2 win.

The split left Robertsdale with a 7-19 record. BCHS improved to 9-15 with the nightcap win. The Golden Bears play a three-game series this weekend against Daphne, which has already clinched first place in 6A Area 3> The two teams will play a Friday doubleheader starting in Daphne at 4:30 p.m. and a single game at Robertsdale at 1 p.m. Saturday.

BCHS hosts 6A Area 4 foe LeFlore in a single game at 6:30 p.m. Friday, then plays the Rattlers in a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader in Mobile. Baldwin County and Robertsdale will also participate in Gulf Shores High’s Nike Classic Tournament next week.

Three singles, two walks and the second of two Tigers errors following a BCHS double play helped Robertsdale score its four seventh-inning runs in the first game. Matt Hadley’s bloop RBI single drove in Tyler Munn with the go-ahead run. Logan Ramage singled home the final run of the rally.

The Tigers scored first with an unearned run in the first inning, then Robertsdale scored twice in the bottom half to go ahead on a one-out walk to Ramage, the first of three straight doubles by Travis Waddle, James Knight’s RBI single and a ground out by James Galanapolis. The first of two fielding errors in the game by RHS right fielder Hadley helped Baldwin County tie the score in the second on an RBI single by Lee Bush.

Waddle doubled again with one out in the third and took third on a wild pitch, but was thrown out at the plate by BCHS shortsop Josh Huggins trying to score on Knight’s grounder. That was the only serious scoring threat by either team in the third through fifth innings.

Tom Sawyer pitched a five-hitter for Robertsdalke to get the first-game win. He struck out three and walked two. Cole White was the losing pitcher. He went the distance, allowing seven hits and six walks wile hitting two batters. Three of the RHS runs were unearned.

Travis Corley and Bush had two hits each for the Tigers.

Baldwin County rallied with two outs in the seventh in the second game for its win. Rob Reid and White had infield singles, then Dusty Roberts tied the score with a ground rule double to right field. Munn relieveed starter Galanopolis but forced in the go-ahead run by walking Huggins and hitting Demetrius Coley.

Bush followed Coley’s leadoff single in the second wityh an RBI double to right for the game’s first run. Tyler Sundie’s one-out single and Jesse Fuqua’s triple into the right field corner tied the game in the third.

Owen Williams’ one-out single and two-out base hits by Fuqua and Ramage put Robertsdale ahead in the fifth.

Galanopolis gave up all six BCHS hits. He struck out four and walked three. Huggins scattered seven hits to improve to 2-0 for the Tigers. He struck out four, walked two and hit a batter.

Fuqua and Munn had two hits each for Robertsdale.
