ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — You’ve heard of Muscle Beach in California. Now check out one of the only outdoor workout facilities around at The R.A.C. Health & Fitness Center, located at 18601 E. Silverhill Ave., behind Regions Bank in Robertsdale.

Dubbed “The Scrap Yard,” the facility plans to open to its membership the week of March 14.

“We wanted to do something unique, something different,” said Robbie Fox, facility manager and certified personal trainer at The R.A.C. “This is something you won’t find anywhere around here, at least for 100 miles.”

The fenced-in facility features mostly free weights using a lot of re-purposed materials, Fox said.

“We have a few machines, but not many,” he said. “We have to make sure the equipment stands up to changing weather conditions.”

Fox worked most of his career as a welder before moving to Alabama with his wife four years ago.

“I just wanted to do something to make a difference in people’s lives and made the decision to become a personal trainer,” he said. “I worked at different places around as a personal trainer before coming here about a year-and-a-half ago and have been in this office (as facility manager) about four months.”

According to its website, rachealthcomplex.com, the R.A.C. is one of the largest 24-hour, 7-day-a-week facilities in Baldwin County with over 8,000 square feet of workout and tanning facilities.

Started in 1997, the R.A.C. offers a wide range of workout opportunities, including personal training and boot camps. The R.A.C. also partners with senior citizen programs such as Rehab in Motion, Healthways Silver Sneakers and Silver & Fit.

“We’ve been offering outdoor boot camps for a while now, but this is something new for us,” Fox said. The facility also includes TRX training and will hold TRX classes outside once the facility is up and running, Fox said.
