Gerald E. Roach

Gerald E. Roach, born in Clark, S.D. on April 27, 1919 to Arabella McElderry and John Nicholas Roach, died Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at William F. Green State Veterans Home.

He is survived by his sister, Nadine Cook of Belleville, Ill. Also mourning his loss are his nieces, Judy Johnson of Elberta, Leona Taylor of Marietta, Ga. and Joan Anderson of Cape Coral, Fla.

He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters; as well as Sally, his beloved wife of almost 50 years. She was the light of his life, and he missed her very much.

Mr. Roach honorably served his country in World War II. He fought in every major Pacific sea battle. The majority of Mr. Roach’s service was aboard the USS Colorado.

He always maintained his love of country, and was extremely proud to watch one great-great-nephew, Daniel Pate, graduate from West Point and another, Ben Johnson, graduate ROTC at the University of Alabama to become an Army officer.

Mr. Roach maintained a close relationship with his nephew by marriage, Thomas Johnson, during the nephew’s active duty and retirement as a colonel in the United States Air Force.

Mr. Roach had an extensive career with Groves Construction Co. He acted as supervisor on major road and dam projects throughout the eastern half of this great country. He was active in the Republican Party.

Uncle Gerry was a boxer, a builder, a warrior, a patriot, a loving husband, a loyal brother and a super uncle. He will be greatly missed by his extended family.

Mr. Roach attended Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church for several years.

No formal services are planned. A private graveside service will be held on Monday, July 29, 2013 at Whitt-Brown Cemetery in Bon Secour.
