George Tracy Van Cleve, age 94, a resident of Foley for 20 years, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2012.
Born in Helena, Montana, he lived a long and eventful life. Raised on a sheep ranch, he built Liberty Ships during WWII and started a drywall company when drywall was still an unknown to most. He worked on the Navaho reservation when there were no roads to the building sites and materials had to be hauled in over dirt paths. He loved water and snow skiing, fishing, traveling, and camping in remote spots. Most of his life was spent in Albuquerque, N.M., where many of his family still live. He was beloved by his wife, Marcia; sons, Gary Van Cleve and Greg (Sue) Van Cleve; daughters, Gail (Amos) Giron and Gretchen (Steven) Welch; stepdaughters, Jena (Corkey) Baca and Julia (Steve) Karr; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 2, 2012, at Pine Rest Funeral Home.
