Gene Austin Lowell Sr.

Gene Austin Lowell Sr., born March 1, 1928 in Fairhope to the late Hugh Edwin Lowell Sr. and the late Elsie Grace Kerr, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011.

He grew up on the Eastern Shore until enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in South Dakota. He was a member of the Dwelling Place, where he served as Senior Elder. He retired Civil Service PNS in 1984.

Mr. Lowell loved to cook and share his recipes. He was an avid fisherman, casting his net at every opportunity, played pool, gardened with a green thumb and loved music, having an extensive record collection. Mr. Lowell was always ready with a quick joke and witty grin.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Evelyn Lowell of Fairhope; four daughters, Julie Lowell (Kenneth Bradley) Moore of Humble, Texas, Mary Annette Lowell (Phillip Lamar) Turner of Birmingham, Ala., Paula Lowell (Steven) Hughes of Concord, N.C. and Pamela Lowell (Matthew Tod) Herren of Pensacola, Fla.; a son, Gene Austin Lowell Jr. of Scottsdale, Ariz.; sister, Carolyn Lowell DuBose of Tustin, Calif.; two brothers, Hugh Edwin Lowell Jr. of Mobile, and Elwood Martin Lowell of Fairhope; 12 grandchildren, Gene Austin Lowell III, Jessica Turner (Dwight David) Holley, Kenneth Brandon Moore, Steven Bradley Hughes, Phillip Clark (Katie Sue) Turner, Amber Faith Moore, Timothy James Turner, Matthew Clinton Hughes, Jared Alexander Lowell, Micah Paul Hughes, Myles Lowell Herren and Jeremy Tod Herren; and one great-grandchild, Emma Sue Turner.

Mr. Lowell was loved by many who considered him a father figure, numerous nieces, nephews and countless others.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, at 3 p.m., at the chapel of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services.

Interment will be at Memory Gardens of Fairhope.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice.
