Gator hunt gets go-ahead from state officials

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is currently accepting applications for Baldwin and Mobile area hunters interested in snagging one of 125 available alligator season slots.

The split season will be held over two weekends – Aug. 12-15 and 19-22 – but the registration deadline to apply for a valid Alligator Possession Tag is July 11.

According to the conservation department,  those selected will be allowed to hunt during the designated times in the  “private and public waters of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta,  south of the Washington, Clarke and Monroe county lines, west of Alabama Highway 59 to the  intersection of 225 south to U.S. 31, north of U.S. 31, north and east of U.S. Truck Route 90 to the intersection of U.S. Highway 43, and east of U.S. Highway 43 to the Mobile-Washington county line.”

Hunters will be chosen via lottery and those granted licenses are only allowed to capture one alligator at least six feet in length and must do so between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The special season is open only to Alabama residents who are at least 16 years old. Out-of-state participants are only allowed to take part as hunting assistants and require their own licenses.

Applicants selected to participate in the hunt must attend a training course at 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center on the Causeway, unless such training has already been obtained and can be verified.
