Julius Patrick “Joe” Garwin, born Jan. 2, 1923 in Philadelphia to Julio and Lillian Garcia from Uruaguay, South America, died Feb. 27, 2008.
He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a BS in history. He furthered his education at the University of Iowa, receiving a Masters Degree in social work. He also attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and Prarie Bible Institute in Three Hills Alberta, Canada.
In 1957 he married Helen Sander and they had two children, a son, Jonathan David and a daughter, Lynette Catherine. Prior to a car accident in 1973 that rendered him wheelchair bound, he was an avid sportsman. He fulfilled his career by serving others and he was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Silverhill.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Jonathan; and his son-in-law Robert Patterson.
Survivors include his wife and daughter.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29 at Silverhill Covenant church with the Rev. Jesse Adams officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Postville Cemetery in Postville, Iowa.
