Gabrielle gets her name as minimal tropical storm

Miami, Fla. – As of its 2:00 a.m. update Thursday morning the National Hurricane Center upgraded newly-named 'Gabrielle' to tropical storm status.

While tropical storm warnings went into effect for the entire island territory of Puerto Rico, the current forecast track takes this storm towards the north with no threat to the U.S. mainland.

Maximum winds in Gabrielle are presently posted at 40 m.p.h.

NHC's overnight statement on the upgrade was short and simple:

..GABRIELLE BRINGING HEAVY RAINS TO PUERTO RICO AND ADJACENT ISLANDS...
