Fun, flavored Fridays return to Foley

Posted

FOLEY – Beginning this week, Heritage Park will be a little more fruitful as both the fifth annual Foley Farmers Market and Music and a Movie return on Fridays.

From 3 p.m.-6 p.m. each Friday through June, except Mother’s Day Weekend, the Farmers market will feature local and regional farmers and vendors selling fresh produce and locally produced wares that range from baked goods and seafood to honey and flowering plants.

“It’s an ongoing event that’s grown,” Foley City Administrator Mike Thompson said in a phone interview.

Market Manager Linda Hula cited economics as one reason for that growth.

“There is nothing like mouth-watering produce direct from the garden, and besides the health benefits, those watching their pennies usually will find locally grown produce to be more affordable,” she said.

Along with that is the budget-friendly Music and a Movie, in which the city of Foley provides an evening of live entertainment that starts at 6 p.m. each Friday through June, except Mother’s Day weekend and June 14. Then a free movie starts at sunset in the park. Admission is free, but vendors will be on hand to sell concessions.

According to Thompson, this series has also increased in popularity.

“I know when you go by, there are a lot of people there,” he said.

This family-oriented event is presented each year by the city of Foley and generously supported by season sponsors, Riviera Utilities, Baldwin EMC, WHEP AM & FM, Sunny 105.7, Star Key Storage and the State of Alabama Farmers Market Authority. Heritage Park is located at the intersection of Alabama Highway 59 and U.S. Highway 98 in Foley. For more information, visit www.VisitFoley.org.
