DAPHNE, Ala. — Summertime on the Eastern Shore can mean sweltering temperatures and days spent inside air-conditioned homes.
Or it could mean splashing around for a cool-down at W.O. Lott Park.
One way to beat the heat is the city of Daphne’s Wet n’ Wild Wednesdays, which take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays in June at the park on Main Street.
The free event will feature inflatable water slides and pools for children 2–12. There will also be about 10 inflatable wading pools for toddlers, according to David McKelroy, recreation director.
“We try to break it down to where there’s something for all ages,” he said.
The Daphne High School Dance Team will sell refreshments during the festivities as part of their fundraising efforts for uniforms and travel, he said.
Children who go should wear bathing suits and bring a towel, Megan Matrone, recreation programs coordinator, said. Guardians are required to supervise children; they can watch from the shade of provided tents.
About 300 people per day attended the event last year, she said.
“We feel that it is important to offer the families of our community a free event to enjoy during the summer,” she said.
McKelroy agreed.
“Moms can get kids out of the house, get ’em outside,” he said. “Not everyone has access to pools.
“It’s a way to cool off in the mornings before it gets too hot.”
Matrone added that the festivities allow for fellowship with neighbors.
“Families should come because it is a great way — and free way — to enjoy a few days out in the sun,” she said.
