ROBERTSDALE, Ala. – For the ninth straight year to commemorate the fallen heroes of 9/11, Fred’s Super Dollar stores across America are raising money to give back to local communities.
Now through Sept. 12, stores will be selling “Hero Hats” for $1 each with proceeds going to local first responders.
In Robertsdale, proceeds from the event will be split between the Robertsdale Fire and Police departments, said Sherry White, manager of store 2820 located at 17870 Baldwin Farms Road (just west of the intersection at Highway 59 and U.S. Highway 90).
“We’ve had a really good response in the past,” White said, “and we’re hoping for a good response again this year.”
In addition, all operating profits from store sales on Sept. 11 will be donated, White said. The store will also be hosting the Pepsi Wagon, selling hot dogs and baked goods that weekend.
“Since Sept. 11 is on a Sunday this year, we may end up doing that on Saturday,” White said. “I haven’t decided yet, but either way we’re hoping to have a good turnout.”
“Hero Hats” are paper cut-outs that customers pay $1 to sign and hang in the window of their local Fred’s Super Dollar to show visible support of their area’s emergency teams.
Since the promotion began, Fred’s Super Dollar has raised more than $2 million for local fire, police and sheriff departments. In 2010, Fred’s Super Dollar donated $317,458.
In addition to the Robertsdale store, Fred’s Super Store 1565, located at 310 U.S. Highway 98 in Fairhope, will also be participating in the program.
