BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Former Spanish Fort multisport athlete Garrett Schumacher, now a University of South Alabama senior, broke his own Jaguars heptathlon record last week in the Samford Stand Alone Multi Competition held at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The seven-event competition took place over two days at the indoor facility Wednesday and Thursday.
The Spanish Fort native’s newest USA heptathlon record of 5,084 points surpassed his own school best by 53 points. The latest best-ever Jag mark was good for a second-place mens finish overall in a field which featured athletes from Mississippi State University, Samford University, Troy University, the University of Mississippi, South and Vanderbilt University.
Schumacher won the pole vault event with a jump of 15 feet-2.75 inches, second in the high jump at 6.0 feet, second in the shot put at 39-00.25, third in the long jump at 21-02.50, second in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.84 seconds, second in the 60-meter dash in 7.14 seconds and fifth in the 1,000-meter run in 2:53.71.
Owning a school record for a major college program is a major accomplishment said Spanish Fort track and field coach Michael Rauch which can be a feat to inspire others, especially high school and younger athletes.
“We are very proud of Garrett carrying on the Toro tradition of excellence,” Rauch said. ”Doing something that no one has been able to do before you is a great accomplishment and demonstrates the work that he put in to get there. I hope that all track athletes see what they can accomplish beyond high school athletics.”
