GULF SHORES, Ala. – Former Florida wide receiver Chris Doering, Auburn quarterback Ben Leard and Georgia quarterback David Green talked about some of the SEC’s biggest rivalries during a CSS Legends Interview on Saturday evening at SEC Beach Fest in Gulf Shores.
Doering, who was part of three SEC Championship teams (1993-95) and was a First Team All-SEC and Second Team All-American in 1995 for Florida, talked about growing up around the Gators’ bitter rivalry with Georgia. Doering caught the game-winning touchdown pass in the Gators’ 1994 SEC Championship Game win over Alabama. He said after the game the first person who tried to interview him was a former Georgia player.
“I said ‘hey I hated you when I was a kid’,” Doering said, laughing. “It’s something that was stuck in my mind. I caught the game-winning pass and the first thing that came to my mind was to tell him that. “
The Gators won five straight games against Georgia while Doering was on campus and beat the Bulldogs in 13-of-14 contests from 1991-2003.
“I was lucky to be part of the team that turned the tide when coach (Steve) Spurrier came. He told us when he came in that our number one goal was to beat Georgia, and for my five years there we did.”
SEC Beach Fest continues on Sunday.
