Foley woman arrested in Craft Farms Property Owners Association embezzlement case

An investigation into a report of embezzlement in March has resulted in the arrest of a 54-year-old Foley resident who is accused of diverting funds for personal use.

The Gulf Shores Police Department released a statement over the weekend announcing Angela D. Mitchell’s arrest and the details that led it. According to John Mitchell, president of the Craft Farms Property Owners Association (POA), after Angela Mitchell resigned as the POA’s property manager in May 2022, the board reviewed the book.

“As we very quickly looked at the books and started investigating, we contacted the police and our insurance company,” Mitchell said.

Detectives with the GSPD Criminal Investigative Division began reviewing the POA’s financial records for January 2019 through May 2022. While reviewing expenditures that occurred over the three-year period, inconsistencies were identified that led the investigators to suspect the funds were being diverted for personal use.

Evidence was recovered indicating that the POA’s bank debit card was used on numerous occasions to purchase items or pay bills that were not associated with the POA. The charges included food, entertainment, home improvement items and household living expenses like utilities and real estate property taxes.

Investigators also uncovered evidence that showed that Angela Mitchell had overcharged the POA for overtime wages and health insurance reimbursement.

According to John Mitchell, the stolen funds were reimbursed by the POA’s insurance company, and the stolen funds did not affect the Craft Farms homeowners. He also indicated that they have a new property management company.

The investigation identified $40,000 in stolen association funds.

She was arrested and charged with theft of property in the first degree.

Angela and John Mitchell are not related.
