Foley to compete in national America in Bloom program

Posted

Foley will take center stage next week as two nationally recognized America in Bloom advisors visit the city to evaluate its revitalization, beautification and community improvement efforts.

The May 14-15 visit is part of Foley’s participation in the America in Bloom program, a nationwide initiative focused on beautification, environmental stewardship and civic pride. Communities are evaluated on efforts to create vibrant public spaces that strengthen quality of life and economic development.

During the two-day visit, advisors Brent Pemberton and Steve Zwiep will assess Foley in categories including community vitality, floral impact, landscaped areas, urban forestry, environmental initiatives, heritage celebration, community involvement and overall impression.

Participating communities receive written evaluations outlining strengths and areas for improvement. America in Bloom also presents awards recognizing standout projects and achievements, including population category honors, outstanding achievement awards and Community Champion recognition.

Pemberton recently retired from the Texas A&M University System after more than 40 years in horticultural research and education. A specialist in plant performance, greenhouse production and rose research, he serves as professor emeritus of horticulture and Regents Fellow with Texas A&M AgriLife Research.

Zwiep retired after 30 years with the City of Holland, Michigan, where he oversaw more than 400 acres of parks and public landscapes. He also directed floral plantings for Holland’s nationally known Tulip Time Festival, efforts that helped the city earn multiple America in Bloom Floral Display awards.

Since its founding, America in Bloom says more than 400 communities in 44 states have participated in the program, impacting more than 22 million people.

Awards for the 2026 program will be announced Sept. 24-26 during the America in Bloom National Symposium & Awards Celebration in Washington, D.C.

America in Bloom is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping communities become more vibrant and sustainable through beautification, volunteerism and environmental enhancement efforts.
