Foley to begin Miflin Road improvements to ease congestion, boost safety

Posted

Motorists traveling Miflin Road in south Foley should expect periodic traffic impacts in the coming weeks as construction begins on a long-planned project aimed at improving safety and traffic flow along one of the city’s busiest commercial corridors.

Crews are now working between Alabama 59 and South Juniper Street to add turn lanes, curbs and other roadway enhancements. The project is designed to address chronic congestion and a history of traffic accidents along the stretch, which includes numerous conflicting access points for vehicles entering and exiting businesses.

As part of the improvements, the existing median turn lane will be removed to reduce congestion and streamline traffic movement. Plans also call for a new mid-block U-turn location within 1,000 feet of Alabama 59, allowing vehicles to safely cross the roadway without disrupting traffic flow.

The project has been in development for several years following the city’s adoption of a management plan for Miflin Road. During that process, city officials worked closely with business operators along the corridor, incorporating their comments into the final project review.

While construction will require temporary lane closures at times, Miflin Road is expected to remain open throughout the project. Work is anticipated to take three to four months to complete, with city officials aiming to finish improvements before the start of the summer tourist season.
