SPANISH FORT, Alabama - The Foley Lions and Robertsdale Golden Bears opened the season with wins in the Mobile BayBears Hank Aaron Classic at Spanish Fort High School on Monday.
The Bears (1-0) topped last year's 6A runner up Baldwin County Tigers 9-5 and the Lions (1-0) defeated two-time defending 5A champion Spanish Fort 10-6 in the nightcap.
For Foley, starting pitcher Michael Davis went the distance, striking out eight Toros to get the win.
"Michael Davis is our workhorse guy," Foley head coach Mike Reagan said. "He can go 130-135 pitches without even worrying about it. He's the real deal. We were very happy with him tonight."
Foley fell behind 4-0 in the bottom of the first after a two-RBI single from Spanish Fort's Shane English, an RBI single from Tate Godwin and another Toro run scored on a passed ball. The Lions responded with three runs in the top of the second. J.T. Peddrick and Maison Taylor had RBIs, and another run scored when Spanish Fort starter Heith Brown walked Dylan Summerville with the bases loaded.
Down 4-3, the Lions scored five runs in the top of the third. Peddrick loaded the bases with an infield single, then two runs scored on a throwing error at the plate. Peddrick scored on a passed ball, then Taylor and Summerville added RBI hits.
"We got down early and fought our way back," Reagan said. "We battled there long enough and then got the big inning. The five-run inning was a big deal for us. We got some big hitting."
Foley will play Robertsdale at noon and Baldwin County at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Spanish Fort.
In the early game, Tres Givens had five RBIs to lead Robertsdale past Baldwin County. Givens' three-RBI triple in the top of the sixth broke a 4-4 tie and sealed the win for the Bears, who play host Spanish Fort at 9:30 a.m. and face Foley at noon on Tuesday.
Isaac Bradford struck out three hitters in six innings to get the win for Robertsdale. J.A. Harville had 10 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings in a loss for BCHS, who faces Foley at 4 p.m. and Spanish Fort at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
