FOLEY, Alabama — The Foley Lions ripped county rival Robertsdale 35-12 in the Class 6A Region 2 opener for both teams on Friday at Ivan Jones Stadium.
Maison Taylor threw three touchdown passes for the Lions (2-0, 1-0) against the Golden Bears, who fell to 0-2 in head coach Brian Campbell's first season. Foley's Cedrix Reed returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and Taylor's three touchdown passes to Reed, Volantai Adams and Alontai Adams came in the second quarter to give the Lions a 28-0 lead at the half.
The Lions forced three turnovers in the first half and scored off of two of them. Corey Christensen recovered a fumble, and the Lions scored off of Jalen Henry's fumble recovery and Amilcar Blanquiset's interception of Robertsdale quarterback Alphonso Stewart.
"I thought the kickoff return to start the game set the tempo and we were able to make some big plays in the first half," Foley head coach Todd Watson said. "Robertsdale has a good football team and they are going to win a bunch of games this year. We caught some breaks in the turnover department and were able to turn those into points."
Stewart scored the first of his two Robertsdale touchdowns with 56 seconds left in the third quarter. Tevin Sikes picked off Taylor to set up Stewart's 7-yard touchdown run.
Foley scored again after Tyrin Pugh's interception in the fourth quarter. Chris Shepherd carried for a touchdown with six minutes left in the game.
Stewart carried 27 yards for Robertsdale's second touchdown with 5:51 left to play.
"He runs the ball hard, throws the ball well," Watson said of Stewart. "Coach (Brian) Campbell has done a real good job of coaching him up. He hasn't played much quarterback, just came over from receiver. He is a very athletic quarterback and is going to get better as they coach him up."
Both teams will be back in region play next Friday as Foley visits Daphne and Robertsdale visits Northview-Dothan.
