Foley reschedules municipal election

FOLEY — Thanks to the storm system Isaac, Foley residents won’t be heading to the polls Tuesday.

During an emergency special-called meeting Monday afternoon, the Foley City Council rescheduled the election for Sept. 11.

The action comes on the heels of a mandatory evauction issued for residents south of U.S. Highway 98.

“You’re going to have to reschedule if you send have your population off,” Foley City Councilman Ralph Hellmich said.

Because voting takes place in Foley City Hall, the council also agreed to move the location of the 2012 Cry Out America Event, scheduled for Sept. 11, to the Foley Senior Center. The transfer is in case of rain. Otherwise the event will be held at Heritage Park.

Also subsequent to the new election date will be the new date for the canvassing of ballots. If all the necessary items are on hand at the council’s regular meeting on Sept. 17, it will be done then. If not, the canvassing will be conducted at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 18.

Also Monday, the council set its next regular work session for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, and its regular meeting two hours later at 5:30. The meetings had originally been set to follow the canvassing, which was to have taken place on Sept. 4.

Monday’s meeting was held less than 24 hours after a previous emergency meeting on Sunday, in which the council declared a state of emergency in Foley.

Additional South Baldwin municipalities rescheduling elections for Sept. 11 include Magnolia Springs.
