FOLEY, Ala. — Three city officials were in Washington, D.C., last week to talk to 1st District Congressman Jo Bonner.
Mayor John Koniar, Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem Wayne Trawick and City Administrator Perry Wilbourne made the trip March 11-13 to talk to Bonner about projects that Koniar said have the best chance of getting federal funds.
Koniar said the projects they talked about with Bonner were those city staff said weren’t necessarily the most important, but most promising for funding. Koniar said those are the city’s Streetscape Project, “a couple of drainage projects,” surveillance cameras for use in city parks - Koniar said those have been “very successful” - and the Graham Creek Nature Preserve.
Local officials are not attending the National League of Cities meeting this year in Washington, and Koniar said Foley’s city officials got to Washington before the rush and “got to the head of the line.
“Congressman Bonner sits on the Appropriations Committee … so he’ll get something, like the stimulus money. All the cities and counties in his district are lining up to get something. It’s a matter of prioritizing,” Koniar said.
“We didn’t get anything from the Congressman’s office last year, so maybe we will this year.”
