FOLEY, Ala. — This week Darrin Norwood, a county music singer, visited Foley Middle School for a special assembly. Mr. Norwood sang and spoke to the students about his family and life. Mr. Norwood told us about his travels and how he taught a tribe in Africa to sing “Sweet Home Alabama.” Mr. Norwood chose four students from the audience, as well as Mr. Bailey, our principal, to participate in a “Hillbilly Rap” song. Mr. Norwood spoke on the importance of avoiding drugs and alcohol consumption. He spoke to the students about a young girl he knew that lived in Pace, Florida that had been killed by a drunk driver. Foley Middle School students had a great time and participated in a meaningful assembly on drug and alcohol abuse prevention.
Ms. Amanda Cushman’s sixth grade, Exploratory Class completed the study of the skeletal system this week. The culminating activity for the study was “The Cranium Contest”. Class teams constructed models of the human skull. The winners were Brandon Crutchfield, Destiny Buchanan, and Amber Adams. Way to use your brain guys!
Ms. Stephanie Massey’s ESL classes are completing a Christmas Around the World unit. The students have participated in many activities that celebrate Christmas from all regions of the world. Ms. Massey’s students will create a tree full of ornaments that are native to certain countries and will bring in traditional Christmas food from regions of the world.
Ms. Alice Wilson, Spelling Bee Sponsor, would like to remind all Foley Middle School students that the deadline for students to sign up to participate in the Spelling Bee is Friday, Dec. 7.
Ms. Shea Hinson’s seventh grade Science classes are studying bones of a chicken wing. The students are comparing a chicken wing to the bones in a human arm.
Mr. Steve Kimbrell’s seventh grade Social Studies classes are doing a project about the government and Executive Branch of the United States government. Mr. Kimbrell’s students are completing a poster that includes a summary of their project. As part of the project, students must choose a biography to read and complete a book report on the book they chose.
Students in Ms. Annie Shoots seventh grade Literature classes are studying Greek Mythology. The students are using graphic organizer to record information concerning the Greek Gods. Students must choose a book from the library on one of the Greek Gods and they will complete a computer test about the book.
Ms. Francis Stallworth’s seventh grade English classes are finishing Narrative essays. The students will begin to learn about and how to write Persuasive essays in their next unit.
Ms. Kate Pelfrey’s seventh grade math classes are learning about ratios. The students are completing worksheets where they write their favorite ratios as a fraction and simply that fraction as far as it can be broken down.
Mr. Jarod Gillen’s science classes have built fan cars and now are using mousetrap cars to understand speed, velocity and acceleration and how forces applied affect these things. Next week Mr. Gillen’s students will begin building roller coasters.
This Friday, Nov. 30, students at Foley Middle School will be dismissed at noon. Each class will be about 27 minutes long so students will be able to meet with all of their teachers. Students will be served lunch before the noon dismissal.
