FOLEY — Saturday afternoon at Foley Public Library will be steeping with European tradition as an Authentic English Tea kicks off at 2 p.m.
The three-hour event will be hosted by Foley residents John and Anne Medberry, who are both natives of England.
“They’re bringing an authentic English tea pot, finger sandwiches, scones and a variety of English teas,” Foley Public Library Executive Director Steve Horn said in a phone interview.
“The Medberrys are going to share the traditions of an English tea,” Horn said.
Attendees are asked to bring their own tea cup and saucers, and share their own story of its significance, if they wish.
“If not, it (the tea cup and saucer) will be provided,” Horn said.
But that’s not all.
“Plan on playing a few tea party games,” Horn said. “In particular, you might want to brush up on your literary quotes.”
So what’s the dress code?
“Attendees are asked to dress for the occasion,” Horn said. “Some will wear hats and gloves.”
The library director pointed out that the reason for the dress code.
“Authentic will be the name of the game for the event,” Horn said.
But he pointed out that the event is just intended to be all in good fun.
“It’s just a nice afternoon,” Horn said.
Saturday’s event is the brainchild of Foley Public Library staffers Melanie Schnieders and Laura Moody, who were inspired by the library’s recent film series, “Feast Your Eyes.” Then the Medberrys, who attended the series, helped bring it about.
“We have the good fortune to have John and Anne Medberry coming to our tea party,” Horn said.
Admission to the Authentic Tea Party is free, but participants are asked to sign up by calling the library at 251-943-7665.
