Foley Library events to brighten a cold day

Posted

With Santa in full retreat to the North Pole and the days gray and bleak, this time of year can sap one’s energy and depress even the strongest willed among us.  Luckily, it is this very time of year that the Foley Public Library provides many activities to brighten up the dreariest of days. The Foley Library offers one of the best places in Baldwin County to begin your winter exploration to find activities that entertain, and in many cases, enlighten. And, in the end, those cold winter days will pass by much more quickly. From movies to music and everything in between, the Foley Library has just the activity to keep you involved and focused.

The Foley Public Library, in conjunction with the Foley Senior Center, offers a wide variety of movie showings several times each month. The Library’s Winter Film Series presents a film the third Thursday of each month that comes from one of three genres including classics, foreign film and “movies so bad they’re good.” The third genre is one in which the film most likely is not a financial success but is entertaining, funny, interestingly dramatic or ground breaking in some way. These movies are featured in the Foley Library’s upstairs meeting room at 3 p.m. each Thursday, and one patron viewing the movie will win a new copy of the movie at the end of the showing. To find out what the next feature will be or to inquire about any aspect of the Winter Film Series please call the library at 251-943-7665.

In an expansion on this theme the library offers a “Patron Pick Movie” the third Saturday of each month in which a movie, chosen by patrons of the library, is shown. Free popcorn and drinks are available for both the Winter Film Series and the “Patron Pick Movie.” And as always, more information can be obtained by calling the Foley Public Library. In addition to these offerings, the Foley Senior Center presents a monthly movie in the library’s meeting room on the third Tuesday at 1 p.m. For more information concerning the Senior Center Movie, please call 251-943-1877.

On Thursday, Feb. 5, the library will present folk musician Adam Miller in the upstairs meeting room. Miller’s one man show will begin at 6 p.m. and conclude around 8 p.m. The show features Miller who will discuss folk singing and music and play a variety of instruments while singing. Miller is one of the premier autoharpists in the world and is a rather well known folk singer and natural born storyteller. He has been called “an accomplished folklorist, historian and song-collector,” and has amassed a selection of over 5,000 songs that he can use to entertain and teach.  The show is free to patrons but seating is limited, so please call to reserve a seat.

February will also witness the latest in annual book sales sponsored by the Friends of the Foley Public Library. This year’s sale will take place on Feb. 6 and 7 at the Foley Civic Center. The sale will begin on Friday, Feb. 6 at 9 a.m. and last until 6 p.m. that evening. On Saturday, the sale will last from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Members of the Friends of the Foley Library will have the opportunity to participate in a Preview Sale Wine and Cheese Party on Thursday, Feb. 5 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. All of the proceeds from the sale help fund the Foley Public Library. Any questions concerning the book sale or joining the Friends of the Foley Library can be directed to the Foley Public Library at 251-943-7665 or by checking the Foley Public Library website at FoleyLibrary.org.
