An inmate of Foley Jail died in custody this week.
Dora resident Mark Karanick, 52, was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center on Monday.
Officials say Summerdale Police arrested Karanick at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Alabama Highway 59 and Couch Plant Road in Summerdale for driving under the influence, possession of marijuana in the second degree and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was then booked into the Foley Police Jail at 1 a.m. Monday.
“Mr. Karanick was provided breakfast and lunch and checked on throughout the day by Foley corrections officers,” Baldwin County Sheriff’s Capt. Stephen Arthur said in a news release.
Then at approximately 5:20 p.m. Monday, correction officers found Karanick passed out and unresponsive in his jail cell.
“CPR was performed and paramedics responded and attempted to resuscitate the individual,” Arthur said.
Karanick was then taken to SBRMC, where he was pronounced dead.
“The Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit was requested to investigate the incident and that investigation is underway,” Arthur said. There were no visible signs of trauma to the body and the official cause of death at this time is unknown pending an autopsy and toxicology reports.”
Neither law enforcement nor hospital officials could offer additional information at press time.
