FOLEY, Ala. — The Foley High School Band has produced a successful year, whether it be raising enough money for uniforms or attracting a crowd to their concerts. Because of that, these students were recognized.
With the year coming to an end, members are being recognized for their work this semester.
Carl Major, director of the band, said that there are no assistants to the band. He explained that students step up and “do the work.”
The Director’s Award is given to a student that goes above and beyond the call of duty, according to Major. This award was given to Matt Hensell.
Major said Hensell was awarded this because he is willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it.
The Foley Band Pride Award was given to Max Reed for showing the most pride in and out of the classroom.
A national award, the John Philip Sousa Award, was given to Sean Toler. This is awarded to a senior who displays the most musical ability.
Most Outstanding Rookie of the Year was given to Jacob Patterson. Jonathan Gates received the Most Improved Freshman. The Most Outstanding Freshmen were Sydney Reim and Brittany Carlisle. Most Improved Sophomore was awarded to Josh Morrow. Jordan Fiala and Sam Havel got the Most Outstanding Junior awards. Most Improved Senior was Victoria McMullen. The Most Outstanding Seniors were Jessica Wheaton and James Faison.
Most Improved Color Guard Student was awarded to Gabrielle Roelofs. Most Outstanding Color Guard Students were Kristen Griffin and Nicole Godsey.
Lacy Rogers was the Most Improved Percussion Student. The Most Outstanding Percussion Students were Kris Hatcher and Carlee Sinkus.
The band is also preparing for next year, and has released the 2008-2009 program and officers.
According to assistant director, Jimmy O’Cain, the band will perform songs from the Eighties rock genre including: Carry on My Wayward Son by Kansas, Wanted Dead or Alive and You Give Love a Bad Name both by Bon Jovi and Thriller and Billie Jean by Michael Jordan.
Officers for the upcoming school year are: drum major, Julia Faison; band captain, Jordan Fiala; loading crew sergeant, Matt Hensell; drum line captain, Jeremy Brantley; drum line sergeant, C J Johnson; pit captain, Carlee Sinkus; color guard captain, Kristen Griffin; color guard co-captain, Selina Guthas; color guard drill sergeants, Lindsey Russell and Gabrielle Roelofs; flute section leader, Anthony Castro; clarinet section leader, Noelle Hawthorne; saxophone section leader, Jeff Parker; woodwind drill sergeants, Cora Hobbs and Kamryn Clark; trumpet section leader, Ryan Toler; horn section leader, Jacob Rider; trombone/baritone section leader, Jordan Fiala; tuba section leader, Sam Havel; bass drill sergeants, Kat Scott and Kevin Podgorski; sophomore representative, Brittany Carlisle; junior representative, Veronica Breedlove; senior representative, Kristen Griffin.
