Foley expands sidewalks along Alabama 59 and city streets

Foley is moving forward with plans to expand sidewalks throughout the city, including a major extension along Alabama 59.

Foley City Council approved a proposal to survey and design a sidewalk extension from East Orchid Avenue north to East Section Avenue, reaching near the Foley Justice Center and Baldwin County Satellite Courthouse. Once the design is complete, the Foley Street Department will seek council approval for funding to construct the new walkways.

The council has already allocated $1 million for sidewalk projects in the current fiscal year.

Work is underway to extend sidewalks on North Cedar Street north to West Peachtree Avenue, and city officials are coordinating with property owners in the Mills Community in west Foley to secure rights of way for sidewalks in that area. Plans call for the Mills sidewalks to extend east and connect with the Cedar Street walkways, eventually linking to Alabama 59 and other city corridors.

Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the city remains focused on pedestrian safety and accessibility.

"The city of Foley is committed to improving walkability and pedestrian safety across the community,” Hellmich said. “Ongoing and upcoming projects will fill gaps, link important destinations, and strengthen the pedestrian network so the city is safer, easier to get around and more livable for residents and visitors."
