Foley Elementary School’s annual Trunk or Treat and costume contest will be Oct. 25. Thanks to the Junior Ambassadors and Christian Life Foley for sponsoring this event.
The Foley Elementary staff has recently started afternoon tutoring sessions to help students in the areas of reading and math. There are eight teachers working on math skills every Tuesday and Thursday, with approximately 80 students in second, third and fourth grade.
On Wednesday afternoons, there are six teachers working on reading skills with 40 students in grades three and four. Many of the teachers are making use of the new student laptops to help reinforce reading and math concepts.
These students can access their own learning path or perform online activities that the teacher has selected.Ms Hawkins’ class visited Wales West pumpkin patch and rode the train. Thanks to all parents who came and shared in this special day!
They cooked lumberjack fingers for snack as the pumpkins were being carved!
Mrs. Mae Laurendine’s class has been talking about Johnny Appleseed. Last week, they made some homemade applesauce and homemade apple pie! YUM! The class also had a field trip to the Exploreum’s Australia Exhibit on Monday.
The students will continue learning about animals of Australia and their habitats. Australia is the biggest island!
Mrs. O’Connor-Weir’s second-grade class has been working hard! The students in the class have already accumulated over 560 AR points.
The readers of the month were Shelley Moore and Jason Martinez. The class has just finished reading the”Wayside School” series by Louis Sacher. They will begin Judy Bloom’s books next.
In math, students are working with money and place value. They have been learning about proper nouns in grammar. In science they just finished the AMSTI Soils kit. We planted four o’clock seeds and are watching them germinate. We have already grown so much this year in our second grade class!!
Ms. McConnell’s third-grade class has been very busy. In science, they have been studying different ecosystems and the habitats that different animals live in. Students are responsible for writing a paragraph on the animal of his or her choice giving facts about the animal and its habitat, and for making a shoebox scene of that animal’s habitat.
Their projects will be displayed and students will share about their habitat.
In math, they have been using Unifix cubes to build and combine two-digit numbers. Besides using cubes, they have learned to use mental math strategies and knowledge of place value to add numbers. The class also created a thousands chart and is using it to improve number sense to a thousand.
