Foley educators and police honored

FOLEY — Four Forward City educators and one law-enforcement officer were honored by the Vosloh Charitable Foundation during a meeting of the Foley Rotary Club on Friday.

That honor came in the form of being named Teacher of the Year for each Foley school and Officer of the Year from the Foley Police Department, as well as a $1,000 check to spend however they wished.

Among those honors were: Susan Mullek of Foley Elementary, who lauded her fellow teachers during the ceremony.

“We have teachers who are very passionate,” she said.

Fellow recipient Melissa Thompson of Foley Intermediate said she was thrilled to be honored.

“This is a wonderful way to recognize local teachers for our hard work,” she said.

Keith Smith of Foley Middle echoed those sentiments.

“We appreciate the Voslohs and the Vosloh Charitable Foundation,” he said.

While each of the recipients shared how they would spend their prize money, Scott Keenan of Foley High said he and his wife are expecting a daughter in April.

“We’ll spend it on baby stuff,” he said.

Foley Police Officer of the Year Lt. Thurston Bullick said he would possibly get his car repaired.

“We also had a nice Valentine’s Day celebration with our family,” he said.

The David and Sue Vosloh Charitable Foundation was started six years ago as a way to give back to the community.

“Its purpose is to recognize the outstanding public servants in Foley,” Vosloh said via email.

The foundation is governed by a board of directors that for now includes David and Sue Vosloh, plus Tommy Benson.

Teachers and Officer of the Year are selected by each school and the Foley Police Department.

“We began with the first awards five years ago to the policeman and high-school teacher,” Vosloh said, adding that this year’s program grew to include Foley Intermediate for the first time.

He explained that three years ago the Foley Rotary Club partnered with our foundation to host an awards luncheon each spring to recognize the recipients.
