Foley community welcomes soldier home

FOLEY — A Foley man received a hero’s welcome home last week when members of the Glen Lakes community held a parade in his honor.

In tribute to Army Capt. Benton Parsons, who just returned from serving on an intelligence missions overseas, residents drove some 50 golf carts along blocks of the community, sporting the patriotic flags and colors. In addition, they were joined by representatives of the Foley Police and Fire departments. Plus, Parsons was greeted by Foley Mayor John Koniar.

“We had a very good turnout,” Glen Lakes resident David Vosloh said.

That turnout paraded by the home of Glen Lakes residents Rob and Debbie Greason, parents of Parsons’ wife Erin, with whom she has resided during his nine-month mission.

Although the family could not be reached by press time, Vosloh said that the Parsons, who live in Tuscaloosa, were touched by the gesture.

“I think it overwhelmed them with happiness and by the wonderful village effect,” he said.

Voshloh explained that the Forward City community has been giving resident returning soldiers and the families of soldiers killed in the line of duty such an honor for at least 15 years.

“I suspect we do about five a year,” Vosloh said said.

That’s accomplished by coordinating with the 650 residents of Glen Lakes by email.

“It goes out three days ahead of time,” Vosloh said of the email announcement.
