FOLEY, Ala. — Foley City Council approved four Foley Planning Commission public projects at Monday’s meeting. The motion to recommend the projects to the mayor and council came at the Planning Commission’s regular meeting on Feb. 20.
The four projects approved were the Senior Center parking lot, Municipal Complex parking area, the street resurfacing of Baypoint Drive and paving the existing gravel portion of Cypress Street from Lawson Avenue to South Commercial Drive.
Due to technicalities in connection with the bids on the Senior Center and Municipal Complex parking areas, the council approved a resolution Monday rejecting bids previously submitted in connection with the two projects, which will be re-advertised and re-bid. Mayor John Koniar said the resolution to reject the bids was recommended by the city attorney.
The Senior Center parking lot project involves an asphalt overlay, modification to ingress/egress to the northern parking area, and minor modifications to curb and gutter. The Municipal Complex parking area involves asphalt overlay and handicap ramps brought to standard.
The low bid approved Monday for the Cypress Street paving extension (approximately 520 feet) and resurfacing of Baypoint Drive was $157,230 by Asphalt Services.
In other council business, the Foley Fire Department report for February was given by Lt. Chad Brewer, interim chief. Brewer reported 101 total responses in February, an increase of 26.25 percent over the January total of 80. Among the largest number of responses in February were 27 EMS assists, 15 Motor Vehicle Accidents with injuries, and eight grass/brush fires.
The Foley Police Department report for February, given by Chief David Wilson, reflected 91 misdemeanor arrests, three felony arrests, 99 misdemeanor warrants served and one felony warrant served. Also, FPD filed 224 incident/offense reports, worked 58 accidents, wrote 515 traffic citations and 593 warnings, responded to 82 alarms and turned 30 new cases over to the Criminal Investigation Division.
Council members approved a resolution awarding a low bid of $101,778 for landscaping the library and City Hall complex.
A low bid from Pensacola Pools in the amount of $16,748 was approved for a sand filter for the Aaronville Pool.
Also approved was a resolution to purchase an Assistant Children’s Librarian’s Desk ($9,581) and Head of Circulation’s Desk ($9,230) off the state bid list. Also given approval was a resolution amending the Library’s budget for increases of $4,500 for equipment lease and $7,637 for audio-visuals.
A resolution was approved for a new tire changer for the Street Department in the amount of $3,759.
Council members approved a resolution allocating funds to clean up the site of a recent training burn conducted by FFD and other area fire departments. The site is on West Violet Avenue and was the His Place Too building owned by First Baptist Church.
A first reading was approved of an ordinance that would annex Daniel and Jeanette Kinsey’s property on the east side of North Pecan Street into the city. Also, a first reading was given to an ordinance accepting public rights of way and infrastructure improvements in Heather Terrace Subdivision for city maintenance.
A resolution was approved to apply for a Community Development Block Grant with up to a 25 percent match by the city. The funds would be used for sewerage in the Sunset Circle area.
A resolution was approved authorizing payment to Municipal Court Judge Mary Murchison of a one-time check in the amount of $2,187 due to a second docket being added at the court and a budgeted salary increase not being paid out due to administrative error.
Council re-appointed Calvin Hare to the Foley Planning Commission. His term expires April 15, 2008.
Council members also approved two proclamations, one declaring March 2008 as American Red Cross Month, the other honoring Dr. Suess’ Birthday on March 2, 2008.
