FOLEY, Ala. — After hearing objections by Foley Police Department, Foley City Council members moved Monday to carry over an application for a Lounge Retail Liquor License (Class I) for the Pink Pony Club at 122 County Rd. 20 West.
The action came after Police Chief David Wilson recommended the license not be approved, citing “numerous police calls,” some “violent,” in connection with the establishment.
Wilson urged that the matter be carried over in fairness to the club owners. The license applicant is Burrdy Inc.
With the Police Department’s recommendation, however, council members voted approval of liquor licenses for two other businesses.
A Lounge Retail Liquor License (Class I) was approved for applicant Lil Texas LLC under the trade name of Lil Texas for their location at 203 N. Cypress St., formerly the Thirsty Parrot. Also, Retail Beer (On and Off Premises) and Retail Table Wine (On and Off Premises) were approved for Country Corner Cafe Honduras Restaurant for their location at 8951 Ala. Highway 59 South.
During visitor comments, Willie Wilkerson told council members the Foley Housing Authority wanted to have a back to school event for children but had come up short where funds were concerned. She said they needed $75 to $100 for buns and hot dogs and asked if the council do anything to help out.
Mayor John Koniar told her council members would “throw in” $20 or so apiece out of pocket to help out and, at the conclusion of the meeting, the money was collected from council members and turned over to Wilkerson.
In other council action this week, public hearings were set regarding weeds being a public nuisance at several addresses and a proposed amendment to the City of Foley Zoning Ordinance.
The weed abatement sites are 512 6th Avenue, 12441 Osbourne Drive, and Kendall Brook Subdivision, Phase II.
Concerning a second reading approved on an amendment prohibiting door-to-door solicitation in the City of Foley, the mayor noted the changes were prompted after the League of Municipalities reviewed the city’s ordinance on the subject.
Dean Bell of Carnoustie Drive, addressing the mayor and council on door-to-door solicitation, said a lot of people were concerned about the implications of such solicitation. He said it would look bad if every lot in a subdivision had to put up a sign saying no solicitation. He asked if a “nice sign” saying no solicitation could be put up at the entrance to a subdivision and it apply to all lots within that subdivision.
The mayor said they would consult the city’s legal department on the matter, but it was determined shortly thereafter that the amended ordinance, which became effective with Monday’s vote, covered the one sign serving all lots concept.
Other matters approved on Monday included the following:
The Foley High School Homecoming Parade set for Sept. 24 at 5 p.m.
Monty Clark’s reappointment to the Board of Adjustments and Appeals and Mayor Koniar’s appointment to the Riviera Utilities Board.
