FOLEY, Ala. — Foley City Council reappointed several people to boards on Tuesday and approved a resolution accepting the Legislative annexation of certain parcels located along the Foley Beach Express.
Joe Bischoff was reappointed to the Foley Planning Commission, while Sandy Russell was reappointed to the Museum-Archive Advisory Board. Paul Cater’s reappointment was approved for the Library Advisory Board.
The Legislative annexation resolution approved by the council has been described as involving parcels from Baldwin County Road 20 and above. An annexation bill involving the properties was approved by both houses of the Legislature during its last session.
During Tuesday’s meeting approval was given for waiving initial zoning fees for properties coming into the city through the Beach Express annexation. The waiver of fees will remain in place for a year if other property owners in the area want to come into the city.
In other business, with Foley Police Department’s recommendation, the council approved a Retail Beer (off premises only) license for the Mexican Bakery at 1305 and 1307 S. Commercial Dr.
A first reading was approved of an ordinance renewing the Utilities Board of the City of Foley’s cable franchise. Also, a resolution was approved declaring a violation of the city Grass and Weed Ordinance at 2521 Crossford Dr.
Council members approved transferring $1,000 to the Recreation Department for use in summer water aerobics for seniors. A resolution approving the revised scope of the Senior Center’s Advisory Board was also approved.
The council approved two matters for Foley Fire Department. One of those was a request to amend the fiscal year 2010 budget to allow for full payment (up to $350,000) for a custom pumper from the Fire Ad Valorem Account at time of the pumper’s delivery. There would still be a $50,000 transfer from the General Fund for purchase of the truck, but Councilman Ralph Hellmich said the approved action would save the city $9,000.
The council also approved making application for a 2010 Assistance to Firefighters Grant in the amount of $125,000 with a 5 percent match. The grant is through Homeland Security.
Approval was given for Mayor John Koniar to negotiate a site for a BRATS bus terminal in Foley. The council also approved a $300 sponsorship for the Alabama Gulf Coast Christian Academy in Summerdale. Councilman Wayne Trawick abstained.
Sanitation write-offs totaling $486.06 for a 120-day period were approved.
The council agreed to waive fees and approve use of softball fields at Max Griffin Park on May 23 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. for a fundraiser for Leslie Osterday.
Proclamations were read and approved for National Safe Boating Week, National Older Americans Month, and Cobb’s Light History Day. (See related story on page 13A)
The mayor adjourned Tuesday’s meeting to go into executive session to discuss what he called a “competitive economic opportunity.”
