FOLEY, Ala. — McGill-Toolen’s Yellow Jackets fought off a 12-0 Foley run in the fourth period and held on to beat the Lions 65-54 on Tuesday.
Foley trailed 60-38 in the fourth before the 12-point run, but the Jackets outscored the Lions 5-4 to close out the game with a win on Foley’s Senior Night.
Foley honored seniors Darius Powell, Ja’vontae Long, Nick Lawhorn and Malcolm Barnett before the game during a Senior Night ceremony. First-year Foley head coach Shumbe Hunter said his seniors have worked hard to improve despite being coached by three different coaches in three years, part of a five-year run with five different coaches at Foley.
“Those senior guys have been through the fire and have seen five different faces,” Hunter said. “It is tough when I’m the fifth one. They know what I want them to do, but it is hard for them to do it because they have never been taught how to and have never had any stability. It is going to take some time. I feel for them because they don’t have the time to go through with me.”
Barnett led all scorers 19 points, while Long added 10 points and Adams scored nine.
McGill led 12-10 after one period and held a 31-20 lead at the half. The Jackets built a 46-32 lead after three periods.
Foley fell to 3-17 overall in Hunter’s first season.
“We are going to keep pushing,” he said. “We have improved and everybody knows that. I fell like we are going to peak and the right time. When tournament time comes around it is 0-0. It is one and done. We are going to keep being positive and look toward the tournament. Hopefully by that time we’ll be clicking on all cylinders.”
Foley plays at Daphne tonight at 7:30 p.m.
