DAPHNE, Alabama — The Lions led least, but led last where it counts on the board for a 77-76 road win at Daphne Friday.
In a 6A Area 3 game that was tied six times in the final seven minutes and saw the lead change four times in the final two, Foley got the early league advantage with big help from big man Rafael Adams.
The senior center finished with a game-high 36 points in spite of two dry spells in which the Trojans denied him the ball while building leads. Ultimately, he hit the final go-ahead bucket from inside the lane with 7.2 seconds left in the game for the 77-76 final.
“Great to get a win in the area and on the road,” said Foley head coach Shumbe Hunter. “And they bought into that. Of course we had our ups and downs in the game. We took a lead, dropped a lead, took a lead back, dropped the lead, but main thing is we came out victorious and that’s the bottom line. Rafael had a big game. Got a little frustrated in there for a while, but he’s a big time player and he came through.”
The win was also special to Hunter because as a Daphne player in the ‘90s he had won many games in Trojan gym, but never since as an opposing coach.
Foley led 14-6 after the first eight minutes of the game then trailed by 10 points, 41-31, at the half.
Not holding a lead has been a problem for Daphne, which head coach Cedric Yelding feels experience will help correct.
“Finishing games is still a problem for us,” he said. “We still are not at that point that experience will bring. We probably controlled the game tonight as much as 80-85 percent, total time, but poor youthful decisions, sophomore mistakes, turnovers here, let them right back in it. If it had been seniors making those kinds of mental mistakes, I would be a lot more upset. But as young as we are, I think we are making good progress.”
Foley's Volantai Adams and Quinton Butler had 14 points each and Quinton White 4 for FHS. Devontae Young led DHS with 18 points, Taylor Boyd added 13, Jonathan McGaster 11 while Preston Hughes and Bradley Nero shot 10 each for the Trojans.
Foley (3-5, 1-0) will play Booker T. Washington of Pensacola in the Baldwin County High round-robin tournament at 6 p.m. Friday. Daphne (2-5, 0-1) will travel to Vigor Dec. 19.
