FOLEY – Darius Powell had four touchdown passes as the Foley Lions blasted visiting Mary G. Montgomery 41-13 on Homecoming night at Ivan Jones Stadium.
Powell had two touchdown passes in the first half and added two more in the second in the win.
“We had some issues personnel wise with injuries so we had to shift away from some of the things we normally do,” Foley head coach Todd Watson said. “We had to put the game on Darius and (running back) Marcus Washington’s shoulders, and they played well tonight.”
Foley took a 24-0 lead into halftime. The Lions scored first after a Jorge Santa Maria field goal, then added two touchdown passes from Powell to Washington and Tayler Bishop. Washington added a touchdown run to cap the Lions’ first half scoring.
In the second, Foley got on the board quickly after forcing a Mary G. Montgomery fumble. The Lions recovered at the Viking 23. Powell hit Washington for a 22-yard touchdown pass two plays later.
After Mary G. Montgomery scored twice to make the score 31-13 Foley, the Lions responded with a five-play, 64-yard drive capped by a Powell touchdown pass to Santa Maria.
Santa Maria capped Foley’s scoring with another field goal in the fourth quarter.
“It is invaluable to have a kicker like Jorge who can kick the ball in the end zone on every kickoff, then make field goals for you,” Watson said. “Jorge has also worked his way into our receiver rotation and got a touchdown tonight. It is great to have someone like that on our side.”
Foley (3-2) will host 6A, Region 2 foe Daphne on Friday.
