Visitors to Foley’s nature parks could soon see new amenities and improved access as the city moves forward with a series of projects at Graham Creek Nature Preserve and Wolf Creek Park.
Foley City Council approved plans to advance several improvements, including the design of new restrooms and a pavilion at Graham Creek Nature Preserve.
The facilities are planned for Russian Road, according to Leslie Gahagan, the city’s sustainability and natural resources director.
"This would service all of our disc golf courses in the back, as well as the trail heads there," Gahagan said. "We would like to do design this year, see what prices come back to us and then start next year."
Before construction begins, Baldwin County is completing paving work on Russian Road. Gahagan said the paving project should be finished before work starts on the restrooms and pavilion.
The city is also moving ahead with a trail signage project throughout Graham Creek Nature Preserve. The council approved a transfer of funding to begin installation of the signs.
In addition, Foley is seeking an Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs Recreational Trails Program grant to help fund an overlook boardwalk at Wolf Creek Park.
If awarded, the grant would cover 80% of the cost of constructing a boardwalk and observation deck designed to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
