Lions storm past Hurricanes for homecoming victory

FOLEY, Ala. — The Lions drove for four touchdowns en route to a 27-0 halftime lead and took a 30-7 homecoming win over Alma Bryant at Ivan Jones Stadium Friday.

"I think we took steps in the right direction," said Foley head coach Tad Niblett. "I thought our intensity was good, especially in the first half."

Chris Armstrong finished the first two drives of 67 and 59 yards with TD runs of seven and three yards.

Foley took a 13-0 lead into the second quarter. A quarterback sack by Trell Prim (his second of the half) forced the Hurricanes to punt from their 4-yard line. A high fourth-and-long snap and a punter scramble gave the Lions a first-and-goal at the Alma Bryant 5-yard line. The Lions pounced again as Tyron Cosby took the hand off into the end zone on the only play of the drive 63 seconds into the second period.

Another big quarterback sack for a 7-yard loss by Foley’s Kal Nicely on fourth down gave the Lions the ball, but an interception by Bryant defender Morgan Boone delayed the next Foley score.

After a four-play series and forcing a short punt, the Lions went 72 yards in five plays to score with a 12-yard, David Hendrick to Will Crosby TD pass. Dalton Taylor’s PAT kicks made it 27-0 at the intermission.

Taylor added an 18-yard field goal in the third quarter and Alma Bryant (2-2, 0-2) avoided the shutout with a 1-yard TD run with 87 seconds left in the game.

"We had too many unnecessary penalties tonight, but overall the kids response was good," Niblett added. "We just have to keep believing in what we're doing and working hard to keep getting better each week."

The Lions (3-1, 2-1) will host McGill-Toolen Catholic (3-0, 2-0) next (Sept. 16) at 7 p.m.
