Two people are dead after a small private plane crashed Saturday evening in Bon Secour Bay, approximately seven miles west of Gulf Shores International Airport, according to the Gulf Shores Police Department.

Officers with the department’s Marine Unit responded around 7 p.m. to the aircraft’s last known radar location and found a debris field in the water. Crews recovered two bodies; no additional passengers were found.

Tracking info from the ADS-B Exchange shows the aircraft, a Beechcraft Bonanza A36, departed Palm Coast, Florida and was on approach to land at Gulf Shores International Airport when it went down approximately an hour and 20 minutes later.

Gulf Shores Fire Rescue, Orange Beach Police Department, Oyster Bay Fire Department, Daphne Search and Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard assisted in a search of the surrounding area.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones affected by this tragic event. We extend our deepest condolences during this difficult time,” the Gulf Shores Police Department said in a statement.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation.

Anyone who spots debris in the area is asked to call the Gulf Shores Police Department at 251-968-2431. Do not collect or disturb any debris.
