Florence Morton Greaves (“Flossie”) Leatherbury

Florence Morton Greaves (“Flossie”) Leatherbury died on July 12, 2015, in Mobile, Ala.

Flossie was born in Forest, Va. on May 5, 1920. She grew up in Mobile and attended Murphy High School.

She married Gregory Luce “Greg” Leatherbury on Sept. 28, 1940, in Ridley Park, Pa. Flossie and Greg were longtime members of All Saints Episcopal Church.

She was a member of the Junior League of Mobile, The National Society of Colonial Dames of America and The National Society of Colonial Dames of the XVII Century.

She was also a member of several mystic societies and her Sewing Club.

Flossie is survived by her eight children, Ellen L. McWhorter (Hobart), Mary Louise L. Ritter, Florence L. Ladd (Ernest, III), Gregory L. Leatherbury Jr. (Susie), Laura L. Riggins, Sadie L. Alexander (Richard), Thomas G. Leatherbury (Melissa) and Edward S. Leatherbury; her 17 grandchildren, Burgess A. “Tommy” Thomasson Jr. (Julie), Stuart D. Ritter, George L. Ritter (Megan), Ernest F. Ladd IV (Leah), Ellen L. Odom (Chris), Gregory Luce Leatherbury III (Elizabeth), Clifton Thames Leatherbury, Lesley Acker Payne (Frazier), Gray L. Acker, Sadie Alexander Hollon (Jay), Ruth  Alexander Clute (Rob), Richard G. Alexander Jr., Thomas G. Leatherbury Jr., Katie Leatherbury, Margaret Leatherbury, Edward S. Leatherbury Jr. and Virginia Leatherbury; and also by  21 great-grandchildren, Ryan, Peyton and Emma Thomasson, Alexander and Ethan Ritter, Kristen and David Ritter, Brendan  Ritter, Ernest, V and Angus Ladd, Carol and Lillian Odom, Ann Coleman and Parker Leatherbury, Thames, Mac and Ann Gates Leatherbury, Lula and Corinne Payne, James, V and Lucy Hollon; her sisters-in-law, Jean B. Greaves and Martha S. Greaves; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Flossie was predeceased by her husband Greg, who died on Jan. 11, 2009; her parents, Thomas Guy and Ellen Radford Greaves; her brothers, Thomas G. Greaves Jr., Walker R. Greaves and John A. Greaves; and her grandchildren, Louise Ritter, David L. Ritter and Lucy Alexander.

The family also wishes to express their special love and affection of Flossie’s lifelong devoted caretakers, Christine McCreary and Winnie Leigh Davis. The family gives special thanks to the staff of Somerby, and to her sitters during the final eight months of her life, Sherry Johnson, Ruth Scoggin and Gloria Norris.

There will be a private family burial service.

A memorial service to celebrate Flossie’s life will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, with a reception immediately following in the Church Parish Hall.
