SPANISH FORT, Ala. – Spanish Fort quarterback Ameriol Finley played his first game under the red and black uniform, and the first snap of the game he darted to the left side of the field, outran the Mary G. Montgomery defenders around the corner and gave the Toros the lead with a 28-yard touchdown run.
The senior didn’t stop there.
Finley scored five rushing touchdowns, the longest being a 75-yard burst in the third quarter, and had more than 300 all-purpose yards as the Spanish Fort Toros (3-1, 1-1) defeated Mary G. Montgomery (1-3, 0-2) 48-21 Friday night.
Finley, who was suspended for the first three games of the season, ran for over 200 yards, and got some work in on defense and even special teams.
On the opening kickoff, Coach Bryant Vincent had Finley back to return the kick, but Mary G. Montgomery kicked towards Davares Ambrose, who ran it back to the Vikings’ 28-yard line.
One play later, the Toros grabbed the lead.
On the next Spanish Fort possession, Coach Vincent decided to go for the first down on a fourth-and-one with a 7-0 advantage. Finley got the first down on a quarterback sneak.
“I felt like we could get a yard,” Vincent said about his decision not to punt. “I felt like we could seize the opportunity and seize the momentum early in the game.”
The decision paid off as the drive ended in a 10-yard touchdown run by Finley to give Spanish Fort a 14-0 lead with 5:53 left in the first quarter.
On Mary G. Montgomery’s next possession, defensive back Garrett Horst intercepted Vikings quarterback Harrison Corley’s pass over the middle and returned it for a touchdown. Spanish Fort scored two more touchdowns and went into halftime with a 34-7 lead.
Toros quarterback Joel Poe took a few snaps throughout the game, and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Troy Brown with 11:54 left in the game to give Spanish Fort a 48-14 lead.
Spanish Fort racked up 447 yards of total offense (292 yards rushing) compared to the Vikings’ 295. The Toros also forced four first half turnovers to set the tone on defense.
Coach Bryant Vincent told his team after the game he was proud of the progress they made since the loss to St. Paul’s the week before.
“I feel like we got better as a football team this past week,” Coach Vincent said. “We still got a long way to go.”
Wide receiver Jarred Johnson was one of the bright spots for the Vikings, pulling in two touchdown receptions, one on a quick slant in the second quarter, and the other being a fade route with 8:54 left in the fourth quarter.
Vikings running back Rodney Urban scored on an 11-yard run on the opening drive of the third quarter to cut the Spanish Fort lead to 34-14.
