DAPHNE, Ala. — Rev. Jim Fillingim was honored on Sunday for 41 years of ministry in the United Methodist Church with a retirement reception at Daphne United Methodist Church.
Fillingim served in Daphne for seven years; several hundred church members, friends, fellow pastors and members of other churches Fillingim served attended the celebration, and many offered tributes of appreciation.
Bay Pines District superintendent, the Rev. Fred Outlaw, called Fillingim “humble, gentle, and an easy spirit” whose leadership helped the Daphne church grow new ministries in the community. Former church council chairperson, David Huggins, said Fillingim was the shepherd and pastor Daphne needed to expand its ministries in missions and service. The Community Life Center was constructed during Fillingim’s tenure; its purpose is to serve Daphne for all types of events and ministries. Church member James Allen said, “Brother Jim was more than a preacher, more than a pastor. He was a friend.” That was the sentiment of many who honored him.
Church member Rhonda Gulledge said, “I appreciate the way Jim has challenged our congregation to live more Christ-like lives and to really study God’s Word. Jim has always led by example. He is a man of honesty and integrity, and has never been afraid to share his joys and heartaches from the pulpit. He truly loves people the way Christ loves.”
In his final sermon as senior pastor, Fillingim thanked his wife, Kay, for her “love for the Kingdom and for me,” and he encouraged church members to continue the work of God and his ministries. He challenged the church to do good to everyone, put others before self and think beyond personal interests and needs.
Daphne United Meth-odist Church will welcome a new pastor on June 29, when the Rev. Steve Rascoe begins his ministry there.
Rascoe has served at Park Memorial UMC in Troy for 13 years.
Rascoe is a strong supporter of missions, small groups, children’s activities and Stephen’s Ministry, according to a spokesperson. His first Sunday in the pulpit at Daphne will be July 6. A celebration picnic will be held that afternoon in TimberCreek.
