Five people were arrested from downtown Foley's Colt Grill BBQ & Spirits Tuesday after federal agents executed a search warrant connected to alleged money laundering, labor exploitation and human smuggling in a two-state investigation.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents could be seen inside the restaurant that sits at the corner of North Alston Street and West Laurel Avenue, with agents visible on scene also including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Foley Police Department and Baldwin County Sheriff's Office. When they initially exited, they did not have anyone detained but did remove boxes and files from the restaurant.

Colt Grill opened Jan. 16 after a restoration to the building that used to be the old Foley Bakery, which was built in 1925. It started in Arizona and has four locations out west in Sedona, Prescott, Prescott Valley and Cottonwood.

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, which serves the Arizona county with headquarters in Prescott, issued a statement on July 15 that they were assisting HSI and “multiple other federal agencies” on a “complex criminal investigation involving alleged criminal activity including money laundering and labor exploitation that is tied to all locations of the Colt Grill.”

Later that day, the agency issued a second statement that the operation resulted in the execution of 28 federal search warrants and four federal arrest warrants in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Cottonwood, Sedona and Yavapai County in Arizona, as well as in Foley, "related to illicit money laundering, labor exploitation and human smuggling (additional charges may be forthcoming)." Over 20 immigration-related arrests were also enforced, "but that number has not been finalized as interviews are ongoing."

Other agencies involved in what the Arizona law enforcement agency said has been a three-year federal investigation include ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, Yavapai County and the Department of Labor, IRS - Criminal Investigations.

Highway 98 and Alston Street in the downtown business district area of Foley were closed while the scene was active. Both streets were reopened that afternoon.

Efforts to reach the Foley location for comment were not successful.

"Approximately five people" were arrested from the Foley location, Yasmeen Pitts O'Keefe, deputy communications chief - Southwest, HSI, told GCM Wednesday morning, and said that number is "subject to change as the investigation is ongoing."

The restaurant was not open Wednesday.
