FAIRHOPE, Ala. — St. James Concert Series presents pianists Yakov Kasman and Aleksandra Kasman on Friday, Jan. 22, at 7:30 p.m., at St. James Episcopal Church, 860 N. Section St. in Fairhope.

Last season’s phenomenal concert by Kasman led to a repeat performance, this time with his daughter Aleksandra (“Sasha”), who won the Silver Medal at the VIII Horowitz International Piano Competition in Kiev, Ukraine in October 2008.

Kasman’s debut in America in 1997 as Silver Medalist in the 10th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth was the culmination of several competition triumphs and tours, including prizes at the 1991 Valentino Bucchi Competition in Rome, the 1991 London World Piano Competition, the 1992 Artur Rubinstein International Competition in Tel Aviv and the 1995 International Prokofiev Competition in St. Petersburg.

Since his American debut, he has played more than 150 concerts in the United States, Russia and Asia. He has appeared as soloist with more than 25 orchestras in the U.S., Greece, France, China and Russia.

Kasman has 10 CD recordings on the French Calliope label, including works of Prokofiev, Haydn, Scriabin, Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff, Moussourgsky and Shostakovich.

A graduate and postgraduate of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory and previously a professor of piano at the Music College of the Conservatory, Kasman is now assistant professor of piano-and artist-in-residence at UAB.

Sasha began piano lessons at age 6 with her mother, Tatiana, and for the last four years she has been studying with her father.

Since 2003 Sasha has been a consistent winner of local, state and regional competitions and in July 2008 made her first appearance with an orchestra, performing the complete Mozart Concerto No. 23 with the Ukraine National Symphony.

A ninth-grader at Vestavia Hills High School, Sasha takes ballet lessons and enjoys reading in both English and Russian.

There is no charge for the concert, but a freewill offering will be taken.
