GULF SHORES – The Daphne Trojans jumped out with a 25-5 blowout win in the first game, then won two of three games to close out a victory over Gulf Shores on Thursday.

Daphne (7-6) won 25-5, 16-25, 25-21, 25-20.

“It was a great energy booster,” Daphne coach Kay Flarity said of her team’s fast start in the first game. “Everything was clicking for us.”

Gulf Shores (11-6) used several scoring streaks, including one of six straight points while Erin Brett served, to win the second game. The Dolphins never trailed in the 25-16 win.

Daphne had to come from behind in the third game. The Dolphins jumped out to a 5-0, but the Trojans regrouped and won. Daphne never relinquished the lead in the fourth and final game.

“I was extremely happy with everything today,” Flarity said.

For Daphne, Cherilyn Ramsey had six blocks and 11 kills, Amber Heard had five aces, Krista Owens had 10 digs and Courtney Carter had 17 kills.

Flarity said Carter stood out as a team leader against Gulf Shores.

“Courtney Carter has been hitting it like a cannon,” Flarity said. “If she can stay healthy we should see good things from her this season.”

She also said that sophomore setter Kayla Owens did a good job filling in for injured senior Brooke Carpenter. Carpenter was injured in a match at Foley early this season.

“Kayla Owens has stepped up tremendously,” Flarity said. “She has done an excellent job commanding our offense.”
