Familiar faces, new jobs: Eastern shore baseball teams find head coaches

Daphne hires Basford, Fairhope promotes Hunter as head baseball coaches

Just weeks after both of Baldwin County Public Schools’ baseball teams on the eastern shore had head coaching vacancies, both positions have been filled by some familiar faces.

The Daphne Trojans hired Charles Basford, who had previously served as an assistant coach at the school, and the Fairhope Pirates promoted assistant coach Kyle Hunter to head coach.

Basford spent six years as an assistant before he took over the Elberta Warriors program for the last two years where he recorded a 31-25 record. Elberta won Class 5A’s Area 1 in 2022.

Hunter joined the Fairhope staff before the 2021 season after he spent the previous seven years as the Baldwin County Tigers’ head coach. He helped lead Baldwin County to two straight state quarterfinal appearances and a 111-102 overall record in that time. His first high school head coaching stint was in 2008 and 2009 at Class 3A’s Pleasant Valley.

Brent Boyd left the Daphne job vacant at the end of May after he took a job to be Director of Operations for Perfect Game’s operation in the state of Louisiana.

“I’m very excited to be returning to Daphne High School,” Basford said in a welcome post. “I’ve been in the Baldwin County school system for a total of 8 years, spending the last 2 years as the head baseball coach at Elberta High School. My wife Haley and two children Knox and Vivian are as excited as I am to be joining the Trojan family once again and look forward to this great opportunity for such a very successful program.”

Longtime Fairhope head coach Stu Fuller resigned his post June 16 after 23 years at the helm and said he hoped to see his son Keaton pitch for Troy University more. He later accepted an assistant coaching position at Saraland.
