Fairhope's Seaborn will golf for ULM

FAIRHOPE, Ala. – Fairhope Pirate golfer Mason Seaborn signed to play for the University of Louisiana-Monroe Nov. 10 in the FHS library.

The senior lefty from Montrose said the scholarship had been a basic goal for some time.

"I set it goal by goal to get to different spots in my life," he said. "This has really been one of the top ones so I am very happy right now. It means a whole lot to me because I've basically worked the past five years just to get here."

Fairhope coach Jeff Hauge said the 6-foot-5 long-driving Seaborn has always contributed to the team not only as a major scoring factor, but as a leader.

"Mason is a great person with a big heart and a tremendous competitor. He brings great leadership and is a lot of fun to have on the team," Hauge said adding that Seaborn, who tied for the individual state championship medal in 2009 as a 10th grader, has improved his all-around game as well.

"Mason's strength is, he is really long off the tee. He can crush his drives. But I also want to say a great strength he is learning right now is his short game. He has a great imagination around the green. He is getting sharper and sharper with his short irons and his putting is getting dead on. I look for him to really go low this spring."

Seaborn said choosing the Warhawks was easy after a visit to the Monroe campus and getting to know the team and coach.

"I went there and got to meet the golf team and they were one of the best group of guys I have ever been around," Seaborn said. "The coach is young and I am looking forward to what he is doing with the program. He really seems to know what he is doing. The campus is also one of the best I have ever been on so it was really exciting getting to set foot on that."

Coach Hauge expects Seaborn to keep getting better.

"Mason hasn't even reached his full potential yet. He has continued to grow throughout his career here. As he gets into his college career he will definitely see some tremendous improvements."

Considering a major course of study in finance, Mason is the son of Robert and Letia Seaborn of Montrose.

Hauge also said that NCAA, Division I recognition has positive influence on the team for the upcoming season and for future players.

"It is always awesome to get a Division I scholarship for these guys because it just shows the younger guys in the program that if they stick with it, with a lot of hard work, they can one day achieve that goal, also. Nothing but positives come out of something of this nature. It also gets him confidence going into the spring season that being a D-I prospect he is going to be a leader on the team and the younger guys look up to him. It is a tremendous asset for him to continue his education, also."
