FAIRHOPE, Ala. - At its March 14 meeting this week, Councilman Mike Ford said the City Council should take another look at the revised “tree ordinance” it passed last month.
Without discussion on Feb. 28, the council unanimously adopted an extensive revision of the tree and landscape ordinance. The proposed law had gone through several drafts by the city’s Tree Committee during the past year, based on input and advice from the city attorney.
Ford said several provisions of the new law should be reviewed again, including that the mayor no longer had power to appoint any Tree Committee members, and that the law covers areas within the city’s planning jurisdiction but outside the corporate limits.
Council President Lonnie Mixon indicated he would follow Ford’s recommendation and that the revised ordinance would be reconsidered by the council in an upcoming meeting.
Although the revisions to the law were scheduled for discussion by the council at the work session prior to its Feb. 28 vote that night, the proposed law did not come up at the pre-council meeting that day.
